Designing and making your own products by hand is a really rewarding way to work, it's great to follow the design process from sketchbook to workshop. Working this way also means that I'm able to customise and personalise my products to suit the tastes of my customers.
I mix my own colours for screen-printing, so when customers are re-decorating and re-designing their home, I'm able to colour-match my paint to fit their new design. In the past I've made personalised designs of lampshades, cushions, tea towels and napkins.
Recently I was asked to add a personal message to one of my screen-printed double deckchairs for a wedding anniversary. It was really fun to do something so personal for someone.
I had considered using an existing font but decided that I should draw the design myself, to make it extra special. I sketched out the words a few times and finally settled on a design. I added it to the headrest of the deck chair and it came out really well.
It's always great to work with customers to create a unique and personal design. It's also a great opportunity to learn and develop something new.
